Which is the largest parish in Louisiana? The answer depends on whether you mean area or population.

The parishes, by shape

Every one, drawn to its own scale so the small ones stay recognisable. Shape alone is not a size comparison; the table below carries the areas.

What the map does not say

The parishes of Louisiana are nowhere near the same size. Vernon Parish covers 1,327 sq mi of land, 7.8 times the 169.6 sq mi of Orleans Parish. People are spread even less evenly: Orleans Parish packs 2,136 per sq mi while Cameron Parish holds 3.7 per sq mi.

They were not drawn in one sitting either. Natchitoches Parish dates to 1805, and the boundaries were still being redrawn when Jefferson Davis Parish was organised in 1912, 107 years later. Founding years come from Wikidata and are worth checking against the county's own history before citing.

Water is part of the picture too: 82.5% of St. Bernard Parish is water, the most in the state, which is why its land area and total area disagree. And 26 of the 64 parishes here share their names with counties in other states, so searching by name alone can land in the wrong place; the A to Z index lists every duplicate.
