Distance Between ZIP Codes
Two ZIP codes in, one distance out. The measurement runs between the centres of the two ZIP Code Tabulation Areas, and both are shown on the map with their city and state.
How to use it
- Type the first five-digit ZIP code.
- Type the second one.
- Press Calculate. The distance appears in miles, kilometres and nautical miles, and both ZIP centres are marked on the map.
How it works
The tool loads a file of ZIP Code Tabulation Area (ZCTA) centres built from US Census data and shipped with this site, then computes the great-circle distance between the two centres in the browser. Nothing is sent to a third party.
ZCTAs are the Census approximation of postal ZIP codes. A few ZIPs, mainly PO box and single-building codes, have no ZCTA and are reported as not found. Distance is centre to centre, so two addresses at the far edges of neighbouring rural ZIPs can be much further apart than the figure shown.
Questions
- How many miles is it between two ZIP codes?
- Enter both codes and press Calculate. The answer is the straight-line distance between the centres of the two ZIP areas in miles, with kilometres and nautical miles alongside.
- Is this the driving distance between ZIP codes?
- No. It is a straight line. For a road figure, put the two ZIP codes into the distance between cities tool and press Add driving distance.
- Why is my ZIP code not found?
- The Census does not define an area for PO box only ZIPs, military ZIPs or codes assigned to a single large building. Use the ZIP of the surrounding town instead.
