What County Am I In?
Use your location or type an address and this tool names the county, then pulls its Census figures and neighbours from the same dataset that powers every county page on this site.
How to use it
- Tap "Use my location" and allow the browser to share your position, or type an address, city or ZIP and press Enter.
- You can also click anywhere on the map to ask about that point.
- Read the county name, its FIPS code, seat, population and area, and follow the link to its full page.
- Copy the page address to share the answer; the position is kept in the link.
How it works
Your coordinate is sent to the FCC Area API, which places it inside a county using the Census Bureau 2020 boundaries and returns the county FIPS code. Nothing else about you is sent anywhere.
The FIPS code is then matched to this site's own county data: Vintage 2025 population estimates, Gazetteer land area, the county seat from Wikidata, ACS 2020-2024 income and age, and the Census county adjacency file for the neighbours.
GPS on a phone is usually within a few metres outdoors and can be off by hundreds of metres indoors, so right on a county line the answer can be wrong; check the map marker.
Questions
- How do I find out what county I am in?
- Open this page on your phone, tap "Use my location" and allow location access. The county appears in a second or two, with its seat, population and a link to its page. If you would rather not share your location, type an address instead.
- Does this work outside the United States?
- No. Counties are a US division and the boundary service only covers the 50 states, DC and the territories. For other countries use the "What city am I in" tool, which is worldwide.
- Why does it say a different county from my mailing address?
- ZIP codes and post-office names often cross county lines. Your mail may be addressed to a town whose post office sits in a neighbouring county. The county boundary, not the postal address, decides which county you are in.
- Is my location stored?
- No. Your coordinate goes to the FCC boundary service to be matched to a county and is not stored by this site. The link in your address bar contains the position only so that you can share the result.
