Multi-Stop Route Distance

For delivery rounds, site visits and road trips. Each leg is routed on real roads; the "best order" button tries to shorten the whole loop.

How to use it

  1. Type each stop in order; press Add stop for more, up to 25. Use the arrows to reorder and Remove to drop one.
  2. Tick Return to the first stop for a round trip, and choose car, bicycle or on foot.
  3. Press Calculate route for the leg-by-leg table, totals and the route on the map.
  4. Press Best order first if the order does not matter; then calculate the route and download it as CSV.

How it works

Stops are geocoded through Photon (OpenStreetMap) and the whole sequence is routed by the public Valhalla server on OpenStreetMap roads at posted speeds, without traffic or stop time. The table lists each leg from the routing result; totals are the server’s route summary.

Best order is a heuristic run in the browser on straight-line distances: a nearest-neighbour tour from the first stop, improved by 2-opt until no swap shortens it. It keeps the first stop fixed, usually lands within a few percent of the true shortest order, and is not guaranteed optimal; it never asks a service. The routing server is free and shared, so a 25 stop route can take a while or fail on a busy day.

Questions

How do I calculate total mileage for several stops?
Enter the stops in order, tick the round-trip box if you come back to the start, and press Calculate route. The total and each leg appear in miles and kilometres with the driving time.
Does Best order find the shortest route?
It finds a good one, quickly, using straight-line distances. For most delivery rounds it matches or comes close to the optimum, but with 25 stops there are around 600 billion trillion possible orders and the tool does not check them all.
Can I keep the first and last stop fixed?
The first stop is always fixed. With Return to the first stop ticked the route ends there as well; otherwise the last stop is whatever order the heuristic finds, so move it by hand with the arrows if it must be last.
What is in the CSV?
One row per leg with the from and to stops, miles, kilometres and minutes, plus a totals row, ready for a mileage log or expense claim.
