Coordinates to City
For when you have a coordinate from a photo, a GPS log or a spreadsheet and need to know the place it belongs to.
How to use it
- Paste the coordinate in any format, or click a point on the map.
- Press Find city. The city or town, the county or district, the state or region and the country are listed.
- Copy the result, or paste another coordinate. Up to 25 lines can be looked up in Batch mode.
How it works
The lookup is a reverse geocode against Nominatim (OpenStreetMap) at city zoom, which returns the administrative place containing the point rather than the nearest street. City, town, village and hamlet are all reported as the "city" line, with the type shown next to it.
Nominatim serves one request per second, so a batch of 25 takes about half a minute. A point outside any settlement returns the nearest one that OpenStreetMap has, which for remote areas can be far away.
Questions
- What if the point is not inside a city?
- The tool reports the smallest named place the map data puts the point in, which may be a village, a township or just the county. The place type is shown so you can tell.
- Can I look up many coordinates at once?
- Yes, up to 25 per run in Batch mode, with a CSV download. Larger lists should be split into runs of 25.
