Coordinates to Country
Resolved against country boundaries in the browser, so it works for any point on Earth and says plainly when the point is at sea.
How to use it
- Paste a coordinate in any format, or click the map.
- Press Find country. The country, its flag, ISO codes, capital, currency and calling code are listed and its outline is drawn on the map.
- If the point is at sea the tool says which ocean, and offers a slower online check for small islands the offline map does not carry.
How it works
The point is tested against Natural Earth 1:110m country polygons downloaded once into the browser (about 200 KB). That scale draws coastlines and borders to roughly 10 km, so a point within a few kilometres of a border or coast can fall on the wrong side, and small islands are missing. Reference facts (capital, currency, calling code, driving side, domain) come from a static table compiled from CIA World Factbook style public sources.
When the offline test finds nothing, the point is either at sea or on a feature too small for the file. The "Check online" button asks the OpenStreetMap reverse geocoder, which knows every island but is rate-limited to one request a second.
Questions
- What does "international waters" mean here?
- No country polygon contains the point. Territorial waters extend 12 nautical miles from the coast, and this tool does not model them, so a point just off a beach is also reported as at sea. The named ocean is a rough label by region, not a legal boundary.
- Why did a point in Monaco come back as France?
- The 1:110m boundary file merges microstates and very small territories into their neighbours. Use "Check online" for those; the reverse geocoder resolves them correctly.
- Which ISO codes are shown?
- ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 (two letters, used in domains and flags) and alpha-3 (three letters, used in statistics and passports).
