Coordinates to State

The state and county come from Census boundaries, the ZIP from the postal geocoder, and all three are shown on the map together.

How to use it

  1. Paste a coordinate in any format, or click the map.
  2. Press Find state. The state, its abbreviation, the county and the ZIP code are listed with a link to the county page on this site.
  3. Batch mode accepts up to 25 coordinates, one per line, and exports a CSV.

How it works

State and county come from the FCC Area API, which tests the point against Census Bureau 2020 county boundaries and returns the county FIPS code. The ZIP code comes from a reverse geocode against Nominatim (OpenStreetMap), because ZIP codes are postal routes with no official boundaries and the Census does not publish them.

A point outside the United States returns no state. Points on state lines resolve to whichever side the Census boundary puts them, which for river boundaries follows the legal line, not the current channel.

Questions

Does it work outside the United States?
No. The state and county lookup covers the 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. For other countries use the coordinates-to-country tool.
Why is the ZIP code missing?
OpenStreetMap does not record a postcode for every address, and rural points often have none nearby. The state and county still come from the Census boundaries.
