Address to County Lookup
Each result links to the county’s own page on this site, with its map, neighbours and cited Census figures.
How to use it
- Type a street address and pick it from the suggestions, or type a five-digit ZIP, or paste coordinates.
- Press Enter or "Look up county".
- Read the county, its FIPS code, seat and figures, and follow the link to the county page. Neighbouring counties are listed beneath.
How it works
An address is geocoded by Photon, the OpenStreetMap search service, to a coordinate. A bare five-digit ZIP skips the geocoder: its centre comes from the Census ZIP Code Tabulation Area file shipped with this site. Coordinates are used as typed.
The coordinate is then placed in a county by the FCC Area API using Census 2020 boundaries, which returns the five-digit county FIPS code. That code is matched to this site's county data for the seat, Vintage 2025 population, land area, ACS income and home value, and the adjacency list.
A ZIP can cross county lines, so a ZIP-only lookup answers for the centre of the ZIP area and says so. A street address is placed exactly.
Questions
- How do I find what county an address is in?
- Type the address, choose it from the suggestions and press Enter. The county, its FIPS code and seat appear with a link to the county page. Forty independent cities in Virginia and elsewhere belong to no county and are reported as their own county-equivalent.
- What is a county FIPS code?
- A five-digit code from the Federal Information Processing Standards: two digits for the state and three for the county. 48201 is Harris County, Texas. Government datasets and forms use it because county names repeat across states.
- Can I look up many addresses at once?
- Not on this page; it answers one address at a time so that the free geocoding services are not overloaded. For a list, the county pages carry downloadable data, and the ZIP file behind this tool is public Census data.
