US County Map, Interactive
The national choropleth. Switch the metric and the whole country recolours; hover a county for its numbers and click through to its page.
How to use it
- Choose a metric: population, density, median household income, median home value, median age, housing units, population change or land area.
- Hover or tab to a county to read its figure; the legend shows the five classes.
- Click a county to open its page. "Download SVG" saves the coloured map as a vector file.
How it works
The 3,144 county outlines are the same simplified Census 2025 cartographic boundaries this site uses for its downloadable national map, drawn as an inline SVG in the browser. Alaska and Hawaii are inset, as on the download. Figures come from the county index: Vintage 2025 population estimates, Gazetteer land area, and ACS 2020-2024 five-year income, home value, age and housing.
Colours are quintiles: the counties are sorted by the chosen metric and split into five equal groups, each drawn in one step of the site's sequential palette. Quintiles show rank, not size; a county at the top of the fourth class and the bottom of the fifth can be close in value. The legend gives the range of each class.
Questions
- Which counties are missing a colour?
- A county drawn in the neutral background has no published value for that metric. The ACS withholds a handful of estimates for very small counties, mostly median home value, where the sample is too thin to publish.
- Why are Alaska and Hawaii in the corner?
- They are inset at a smaller scale, the usual convention, so that the lower 48 fill the frame. Alaska is drawn at about a third of its true size.
- Can I use the map elsewhere?
- Yes. The SVG download is a plain vector file with the current colours baked in. The boundaries are public-domain Census Bureau data; a credit to countymapsus.com is appreciated.
