Antipode Finder

Dig straight down and this is where you come out. For most of the world the answer is ocean, which is itself the interesting part.

How to use it

  1. Type a place, use your location, or click the left map.
  2. The right map jumps to the antipode. Under the maps: the antipode coordinates, the country or ocean there, and the distances through and around the Earth.
  3. Click the right map to go the other way: its click becomes the new start point.

How it works

The antipode is the point with the opposite latitude and a longitude 180 degrees away. What is there is tested in the browser against Natural Earth 1:110m country outlines; when no country contains the point an ocean name is assigned by region. The 1:110m outlines omit small islands, so an antipode on, say, Kerguelen or Bermuda shows as ocean.

The through-Earth distance is the Earth's mean diameter (12,742 km) and the surface distance is half the mean circumference (20,015 km); both are the same for every pair of antipodes on a sphere, which is why they are shown once rather than computed per place.

Questions

Is the antipode of the United States really China?
No. That is a schoolyard idea. The antipodes of the contiguous United States lie in the southern Indian Ocean, west and south-west of Australia. Only Hawaii (Botswana) and a few Alaskan islands have land antipodes.
Which places have land antipodes?
Only about 4 percent of land is antipodal to other land. Well-known pairs: much of Spain and New Zealand, Argentina and Chile with China, and parts of Southeast Asia with Peru and Colombia.
What time is it at the antipode?
Roughly 12 hours different, because the longitude differs by 180 degrees. Time zones follow political lines, so the exact offset varies by an hour or two.
