Color a Map

The base maps are drawn from public-domain boundaries, so what you make is yours to publish.

How to use it

  1. Choose a base map: the world, the US states, or the counties of one state.
  2. Pick a colour, then click regions to fill them. Click again with the same colour, or right-click, to clear one.
  3. Type a legend label for each colour you used and choose where the legend sits.
  4. Download the map as SVG or PNG.

How it works

Country outlines come from Natural Earth 1:110m in an Equal Earth projection; US states and counties come from the 2025 Census cartographic boundary files in the same Albers projection as the rest of this site. Everything is inline SVG, so the download is a vector file at any resolution.

Your colouring is stored in the URL as region codes and colour numbers, so the link reproduces the map. Colouring every county of a large state such as Texas can exceed what a browser allows in a URL; the download still works.

Questions

Can I colour every county in the country at once?
This tool colours the counties of one state at a time so each is large enough to click. To colour all counties from data, use Map with Counties, which takes a list of values.
Can I add my own colours?
Yes. Pick any colour with the colour input and press Add colour; it joins the palette.
Does the exported SVG open in Illustrator or Inkscape?
Yes. Each region is a separate path with its name in a title element, so it stays editable.
