Map with ZIP Codes

Customer lists, service areas and mailing routes, mapped from nothing more than a column of ZIP codes.

How to use it

  1. Paste ZIP codes, one per line. Add a group name after a comma to colour territories, for example "10001, East".
  2. Press Plot ZIP codes. Each ZIP is placed at the centre of its ZCTA.
  3. Switch between dots, a heat map and territories, and click a state chip to hide or show its ZIPs.
  4. Export the matched ZIPs with their city, state and population as CSV or GeoJSON.

How it works

Each ZIP is looked up in a table of Census ZIP Code Tabulation Areas (ZCTAs) shipped with this site, with the ZCTA centroid, its 2020 population and the main city and state. ZIP+4 suffixes are dropped and four-digit entries get their leading zero back. A ZIP that is a single building or a PO box has no ZCTA and is listed as unmatched.

The territory mode colours dots by the group you gave; it does not draw ZIP boundaries, which are too large to ship for the whole country. The heat map weights repeated ZIPs more heavily, so a list with duplicates shows where they concentrate.

Questions

Why is a valid ZIP code unmatched?
Around 8,000 ZIP codes are PO boxes or single large receivers with no land area, so the Census assigns them no ZCTA and there is no point to plot.
Can I see the ZIP code boundaries?
Not in this tool. It plots one point per ZIP at the ZCTA centre. The boundary set for the whole country is over 100 MB, which is not something a browser tool should download.
How many ZIP codes can I paste?
Up to 20,000 distinct ZIPs plot in one go. Beyond a few thousand the table under the map shows only the first 500.
