KML Viewer
Placemarks, lines and polygons are rendered with their names and descriptions. The file stays on your machine.
How to use it
- Drop a .kml or .kmz file on the box, or choose one.
- Click a placemark on the map or in the list to read its name, description and extended data.
- Toggle points, lines and polygons with the chips above the stats.
- Convert the file to GeoJSON or GPX with one click.
How it works
KML is parsed with the browser's XML parser: Placemark names, descriptions, ExtendedData, folders and Point, LineString, Polygon, MultiGeometry and gx:Track geometries. KMZ files are unzipped in the browser and the doc.kml inside is read. A placemark with broken coordinates is reported by name and skipped; the rest still draws.
Styles, icons, ground overlays, network links and 3D extrusions are not rendered; everything is drawn in one colour. Files are limited to 8 MB.
Questions
- Why do my custom icons and colours not show?
- The viewer reads geometry and text only. KML styling is not applied, so all features draw in the site accent colour.
- Does it support KMZ?
- Yes. A KMZ is a ZIP holding a KML; it is unzipped in the browser. Images packed inside the KMZ are not shown.
- Can I convert KML to GPX?
- Yes. Placemarks become waypoints and paths become tracks. Polygons have no GPX equivalent and are left out of that export.
